FAMILIES IN NEED
  • Family # 1:
  • Rosebelia is 50 years old and was diagnosed with Parkinson's at age 35;since then she has fought the disease to be able to raise her three kids as a single mom. Currently she is 50 years old and very disabled (wheelchair bound most of the time). Her only income, social security, was considerably reduced after her twins (18 years old) moved away from home, and she’s really struggling to make ends meet. She currently lives with her youngest son Enrique who takes care of her whenever he's not at school. They are very close, and Enrique, 15 years old, (who has grown seeing her mom's Parkinson's progress over the years since he was a little kid) is Rosebelia's best caregiver.
  • Family # 2:
  • Hector is 48 years old and has had Parkinson for about 10 years. He is a participant of the Ali Care Program. He and his wife work in Litchfield Park as field laborers. Arcelia, 58 years old, has hypertension and diabetes. She struggles to get her medications monthly, for like Hector, she doesn’t have medical insurance.
  • Family # 3:
  • Luis is 82 years old and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 4 years ago. He was just diagnosed with stomach cancer and had surgery last month. His wife Lidia is 72 years old and has diabetes, arthritis and osteoporosis. They both relay on their social security as their only income. Lidia makes tamales for sale in order to make some extra money.
  • Family # 4:
  • Maria has 79 years and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease two years ago after she moved to Phoenix from El Salvador. She used to earn her living making and selling rice pudding in her hometown, but currently she no longer works due to her Parkinson’s. She lives with her daughter Rosario who earns her living working for a cleaning company where she makes less than $13,000 per year.
  • Family # 5:
  • Rafael is 63 years old and has had Parkinson’s for about 10 years. He lives with his wife Blanca who works for a banquet company, serving food at different events. Rafael stopped working four years ago due to his Parkinson’s and currently stays at home while his wife earns their living working long hours.
